Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer screening also known as OCS, may be a great method to detect oral cancer at an early stage. Our dentists play an important role in the screening process.

Examination

Your hygienist will complete a thorough examination of your mouth, head and neck to check for any abnormalities.

This can be a routine examination during your regular hygiene appointment. Many screening techniques are available alone or in combination with an examination.

Types of Screening

Extra-oral Examination: A visual examination of the face, head, back and front of the neck, including behind eyeglasses and under the hairline and ears.

Intra-oral Examination: A visual check for anything unusual in the mouth including swelling, indentations, enlarged or swollen salivary glands, ulcer/crusting, symmetry and any changes in texture or colour.

At Progressive Dental, we use Oral Screening Technology called VELscope. This screening technology is designed for patients who would like a more thorough examination of their oral cancer risk.
